Wall mounting a television is one of the most common DIY projects in American households, and one of the most frequently botched. The project appears straightforward — attach a bracket to the wall, hang the TV — and in principle it is. But the details determine whether the result is a clean, professional-looking installation that enhances the room, or a crooked TV at the wrong height with visible cables and lag bolts pulling out of drywall. The most common mistakes — mounting too high, missing studs, ignoring cable management — are all avoidable with basic knowledge and 30 minutes of planning before you pick up a drill.

Our electronics testing team has mounted over 20 TVs across different wall types (wood stud, metal stud, concrete, brick) using mounts from eight different manufacturers. We have tested fixed mounts, tilting mounts, full-motion articulating mounts, and above-fireplace mounts. The construction principles are the same regardless of TV size, mount type, or wall material: find solid structure, mount at the correct height, manage cables invisibly, and double-check level before committing. Here is the complete process.

Step 1: Choosing the Right Mount

TV wall mounts come in four types, and the right choice depends on your viewing arrangement, wall location, and how much flexibility you want after installation.

Fixed (flat) mounts hold the TV flush against the wall with no movement — no tilt, no swivel, no extension. They create the slimmest profile (the TV sits 0.5 to 1 inch from the wall) and the cleanest appearance. Fixed mounts are ideal for TVs mounted directly across from the primary seating position at the correct viewing height. They are the simplest to install, the least expensive ($15 to $30), and the most secure because the weight is distributed directly against the wall with no leverage points. The trade-off: once installed, the viewing angle is fixed.

Tilting mounts hold the TV close to the wall but allow it to tilt downward 5 to 15 degrees. This is important for TVs mounted above eye level — tilting the screen downward aims it at the seated viewer, reducing the off-axis color shift and neck strain that occurs when viewing a flat-mounted TV from below. If your TV will be mounted higher than ideal (above a mantle, in a bedroom for viewing from the bed), a tilting mount is the minimum functionality you need. Cost: $20 to $50.

Full-motion (articulating) mounts extend from the wall on an articulating arm, swivel left and right, tilt up and down, and often rotate for level adjustment. They allow you to pull the TV away from the wall, angle it toward different seating areas, and push it flat against the wall when not in use. Full-motion mounts are ideal for corner installations, open-concept rooms where viewing happens from multiple seating areas, and kitchens where the TV needs to be visible from different positions. They are the most expensive ($40 to $150) and the most demanding to install because the articulating arm creates a significant leverage force on the wall mount point — a 50-pound TV on a 20-inch arm extension generates far more force on the mounting bolts than the same TV on a flat mount. Full-motion mounts absolutely require mounting into wall studs; drywall anchors will not hold the dynamic loading.

Above-fireplace mounts are a specialized category designed to address the most common TV placement mistake in American homes — mounting the TV above the fireplace. This position is almost always too high for comfortable viewing and exposes the TV to heat from the fireplace. Above-fireplace mounts include a pull-down mechanism that lowers the TV to eye level for viewing and raises it back to the high-mount position when not in use. They are expensive ($150 to $400) and require complex installation, but they are the only acceptable solution if the above-fireplace position is non-negotiable.

Step 2: VESA Compatibility

VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) defines the standardized mounting hole patterns on the back of TVs. The VESA pattern is the horizontal and vertical distance (in millimeters) between the four mounting holes. Common patterns include 100x100, 200x200, 300x300, 400x400, and 600x400. Your mount must be compatible with your TV's VESA pattern. Check your TV's specifications (in the manual or on the manufacturer's website) for the VESA pattern before purchasing a mount. Most universal mounts accommodate a range of VESA patterns (e.g., 200x200 to 600x400) using adjustable adapter plates.

Also verify weight compatibility. Your mount must be rated for at least the weight of your TV — preferably 30 to 50 percent more for a safety margin. A 55-inch TV typically weighs 30 to 45 pounds; a 65-inch TV weighs 40 to 60 pounds; a 75-inch TV weighs 55 to 80 pounds. The mount's maximum weight rating is printed on the packaging and should never be exceeded.

Step 3: Finding Studs — The Critical Step

This is where most DIY TV mounts fail. A standard interior wall in an American home is made of half-inch drywall (gypsum board) attached to wood studs. The drywall itself has almost no load-bearing capacity — a lag bolt into drywall alone can hold approximately 10 to 15 pounds before pulling out. Your TV weighs 30 to 80 pounds, and a full-motion mount amplifies the effective force by a factor of two to four. Mounting into studs is mandatory for any TV installation.

Using a stud finder. A quality electronic stud finder ($20 to $40) detects the density change between hollow drywall and solid wood studs behind it. Calibrate the stud finder on a section of wall you know is hollow (away from expected stud locations), then slide it horizontally across the wall at the planned mounting height. When the finder indicates a stud edge, mark it with a pencil. Continue across to find the other edge of the stud and mark it. The center of the stud is between the two marks. Standard stud spacing in residential construction is 16 inches on center — once you find one stud, the next one should be approximately 16 inches away. Verify by finding it independently with the stud finder.

Confirming the stud. Stud finders can give false readings from plumbing pipes, electrical conduit, metal plates, and dense spots in the drywall. Always confirm the stud by driving a small finishing nail or drill bit into the wall at the marked location. If you hit solid wood after penetrating the drywall (about half an inch in), you have confirmed a stud. If the nail or bit pushes through easily past the drywall, you are in a hollow cavity and need to adjust your position. Fill the small test holes with spackle — they are invisible after painting.

What if the studs do not align with your mount? TV mount plates typically have horizontal slots that allow 2 to 4 inches of adjustment in mounting bolt placement. If your studs are at 16-inch centers, most mounts will accommodate this spacing. If your desired TV position does not have two studs within the mount plate's adjustment range, you have three options: (1) shift the TV position to align with available studs, (2) use a mounting plate extension that spans a wider distance, or (3) install a plywood backer board (3/4-inch plywood screwed into two or more studs) that creates a solid mounting surface anywhere within its area.

Height Rule

The Center-at-Eye-Level Standard

The most broken rule in TV mounting

The center of the TV screen should be at seated eye level — approximately 42 to 48 inches from the floor to the center of the screen for a standard sofa seating height of 18 inches. For a 55-inch TV, this means the bottom edge of the TV should be approximately 28 to 34 inches from the floor. For a 65-inch TV, approximately 24 to 30 inches from the floor. Most homeowners mount their TVs far too high — treating the TV as art to be displayed at standing eye level rather than a screen to be watched at seated eye level. An hour of watching a TV mounted at 60 inches center height produces measurable neck strain and fatigue compared to one at 42 to 48 inches. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers recommends a maximum viewing angle of 15 degrees above horizontal; anything higher degrades both comfort and image quality.

Step 4: Mounting the Bracket

Mark the mounting holes. Hold the mount plate against the wall at the planned height, using a level to verify it is perfectly horizontal. Mark the lag bolt holes through the mount plate onto the wall with a pencil. Double-check that all marked holes align with confirmed stud locations. If you are working alone, use a small piece of painter's tape to temporarily hold the mount plate in position while marking.

Pre-drill pilot holes. Using a drill bit slightly smaller than the diameter of the lag bolts (typically a 3/16-inch bit for 5/16-inch lag bolts), drill pilot holes at each marked location. The pilot hole should penetrate the drywall and extend at least 2 inches into the stud. Drilling a pilot hole prevents the stud from splitting and ensures the lag bolt drives straight. If the drill bit encounters no resistance after passing through the drywall, you have missed the stud — recheck and reposition.

Drive the lag bolts. Most TV mount kits include lag bolts (typically 5/16-inch x 2.5-inch to 3-inch). Drive them through the mount plate and into the pilot holes using a socket wrench or impact driver with a socket adapter. Tighten until the mount plate is firmly against the wall with no gap, but do not overtighten — excessive torque can strip the pilot hole in the stud or crack the drywall. The mount plate should not move or flex when you apply moderate force in any direction.

Verify level. Place a level on the installed mount plate and verify horizontal alignment. Even a one-degree deviation from level produces a visible tilt on a large TV. If the mount is not level, loosen the bolts, adjust, and re-tighten. Some mounts have built-in leveling adjustments that allow fine-tuning after the plate is installed.

Step 5: Cable Management

Visible cables hanging from a wall-mounted TV ruin the aesthetic benefit of mounting. There are two approaches to cable management, one of which is code-compliant for power cables and one of which is not.

In-wall cable management kit (recommended). An in-wall cable pass-through kit consists of two low-voltage mounting brackets — one installed behind the TV and one at outlet height. Low-voltage cables (HDMI, Ethernet, coaxial) run through the wall cavity between the two brackets. For power, the kit includes a UL-listed power bridge — an outlet behind the TV connected by Romex cable (through the wall) to an existing outlet below. This is the code-compliant method for running power inside a wall. Running a standard power cord through a wall cavity is a fire code violation in all US jurisdictions — the cord is not rated for in-wall use, and a fault in the cord could ignite insulation or wall materials without visible warning. Cost for a complete kit: $30 to $60.

On-wall cable raceway (alternative). A paintable plastic channel that mounts to the wall surface and conceals cables running from the TV to the outlet. Raceways are easier to install than in-wall kits (no wall cutting required) and are code-compliant for all cable types including power. The trade-off is aesthetics — even a well-painted raceway is visible on close inspection. Cost: $10 to $25.

What not to do: Do not run a standard power cord through the wall. Do not use a standard extension cord behind the wall. Do not cut into the wall without verifying the cavity is clear of plumbing and electrical (use the test-hole method). Do not route cables through insulated cavities on exterior walls if you can avoid it — the cable displaces insulation and the hole compromises the vapor barrier.

Step 6: Hanging the TV

Attach the mounting arms or brackets that came with the mount kit to the back of the TV using the provided hardware (typically M6 or M8 bolts in the VESA mounting holes). Verify that the arms are oriented correctly (they typically have a top and bottom indicated by labels or asymmetric shapes). Lift the TV and hook the arms onto the wall plate. This step usually requires two people for TVs 55 inches and larger — not because of the weight (which is manageable for one person), but because aligning the arms with the wall plate while holding the TV is difficult when you cannot see behind the screen.

Once the TV is hanging, verify level again using a level placed on top of the TV. Many mounts allow fine-tuning of level with set screws on the hanging brackets. Connect cables, adjust tilt and swivel (if applicable), and tighten any set screws that lock the TV's position.

Special Wall Types

Metal studs. Commercial buildings and some newer residential construction use steel studs instead of wood. Standard lag bolts will not hold in metal studs — use toggle bolts (also called butterfly anchors) rated for the load, or install a plywood backer plate spanning two or more metal studs. The plywood is attached to the metal studs with self-tapping metal screws, and the TV mount is then attached to the plywood with standard lag bolts. This approach provides a stronger mounting platform than direct-to-metal-stud methods.

Concrete and brick. Basement walls, exposed brick, and concrete block walls require masonry anchors. Drill holes using a hammer drill with a masonry bit (standard drill bits will not penetrate concrete). Insert sleeve anchors or wedge anchors rated for the load. Concrete and brick are extremely strong mounting surfaces — a properly installed masonry anchor in solid concrete holds several hundred pounds. The challenge is drilling accurate, clean holes; a hammer drill is essential (a standard drill will not penetrate).

Plaster and lath. Older homes have plaster walls over wood lath strips. Stud finders are less reliable on plaster because the lath creates a semi-continuous density behind the plaster surface. Use the magnet method (a strong rare-earth magnet will stick to the nails or screws in the lath where they attach to studs) or the test-hole method (drill small holes at 1-inch intervals until you hit a stud). Once studs are located, the mounting process is the same as drywall — lag bolts through the plaster and lath into the stud.

The Fireplace Mistake

We address this separately because it is the single most common TV mounting error in American homes. In roughly half the houses our team surveyed, the TV was mounted above the fireplace. This position is problematic for three reasons.

It is too high. The typical fireplace mantle is 48 to 54 inches from the floor. A TV mounted above the mantle has its center at 60 to 70 inches — 15 to 25 inches above optimal viewing height. Over extended viewing sessions, this causes neck strain and fatigue. It also degrades image quality on most TV technologies — LED and OLED panels have optimal viewing angles perpendicular to the screen, and the steep upward viewing angle from a sofa to an above-mantle TV reduces contrast and shifts colors.

Heat damage. An active fireplace generates heat that rises directly into the TV. While modern TVs are rated for operating temperatures up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, the air directly above a wood-burning or gas fireplace can exceed this during extended use. Even at temperatures below the rated maximum, chronic heat exposure accelerates the aging of electronic components and reduces the TV's lifespan.

Glare. Fireplaces are often positioned on exterior walls with windows on both sides, creating a high-glare environment that washes out the TV image during daylight hours.

If you must mount above the fireplace, use a pull-down mount that lowers the TV to eye level for viewing, do not run the fireplace while the TV is in the lowered position, and install a mantle that projects far enough to deflect rising heat away from the TV (a minimum of 4 inches of depth, ideally 6 to 8 inches). But the honest recommendation is to find a different wall. Every other position in the room is better than above the fireplace for long-term viewing comfort and TV longevity.
