Sharpening Chisels, Axes, and Mower Blades: A Home Workshop Guide

Most homeowners own tools that have never been sharpened. Lawnmower blades that have chewed through three seasons of grass. Chisels that came out of the package and were never touched up. Axes that bounce off firewood instead of biting into it. Pruning shears that crush branches instead of slicing them. These tools still function — sort of — but they require more effort, produce worse results, and are measurably more dangerous than sharp versions of the same tool. A dull axe glances off wood and goes where momentum takes it, which is often into a shin. A dull mower blade tears grass rather than cutting it, leaving brown tips that invite disease. A dull chisel requires so much force that it slips off the workpiece and gouges whatever is behind it — often your other hand.
The barrier to sharpening is perceived complexity, not actual difficulty. Most homeowners assume sharpening requires expensive equipment, specialized skills, or both. In reality, sharpening the most common household tools requires a flat file, a bench stone, and 10 to 30 minutes per tool. Our workshop testing team spent six months developing and testing sharpening techniques for the ten most common homeowner tools, using equipment that costs less than $50 total. The Essential Sharpening Kit
Before diving into specific tools, assemble a basic sharpening kit. These items cover virtually every tool a homeowner needs to maintain.
A combination bench stone (1000/6000 grit). This is the same type of stone used for kitchen knives. The coarse side establishes new edges; the fine side refines and polishes them. A quality 8-inch combination water stone costs $25 to $40 and will last years with proper maintenance. King and Norton are reliable brands at this price point.
A 10-inch bastard mill file. For larger tools — axes, mower blades, hatchets, machetes — a bench stone is too small and too fine for the initial sharpening. A mill file removes metal quickly and establishes the rough edge profile that you then refine on a stone. Nicholson is the standard brand. Cost: $8 to $12.
A flat honing guide. For chisels and plane blades, maintaining a consistent angle while sharpening is critical for producing a flat, even bevel. A honing guide is a simple jig that clamps to the blade and rolls on the stone, holding the blade at a fixed angle. Cost: $10 to $20.
A leather strop. Stropping is the final step in sharpening that removes the microscopic burr left by the stone and polishes the edge to maximum sharpness. A 2x8-inch piece of leather glued to a flat board works perfectly. Apply a light coating of honing compound (chromium oxide paste) to the leather surface. Cost: $8 to $15 for a pre-made strop, or free if you repurpose an old leather belt.
A permanent marker. When sharpening any tool, coloring the edge bevel with a marker before sharpening allows you to verify that you are maintaining the correct angle — the marker is removed only where the stone or file contacts the metal. If the marker remains on part of the bevel after several strokes, you are not holding the correct angle.
Sharpening Chisels and Plane Blades
Chisels and hand plane blades are the tools where sharpness matters most and where the technique is most refined. Woodworking with a dull chisel is an exercise in frustration and danger. A sharp chisel should be able to pare end-grain hardwood with light hand pressure, producing thin, curled shavings with a smooth, glossy surface. If you are using a mallet for anything other than heavy mortise work, your chisel is dull.
The anatomy of a chisel edge. A chisel has two surfaces that meet at the cutting edge: the flat back and the beveled face. The back must be perfectly flat — any curvature or hollow in the back prevents the edge from forming a crisp intersection with the bevel. The bevel is ground at a primary angle (typically 25 degrees for general-purpose bench chisels) and often has a secondary micro-bevel at the very tip (30 to 35 degrees) that strengthens the edge for harder work.
Step 1: Flatten the back. If the chisel is new or has never been properly sharpened, start by flattening the back. Place the chisel flat on the coarse stone (back side down, bevel facing up) and rub it back and forth with even pressure. You are trying to create a perfectly flat surface for at least the first half-inch from the edge. This may take 5 to 10 minutes on a new chisel. You only need to do this once — after the back is flat, subsequent sharpenings only address the bevel. Check flatness by looking for a consistent scratch pattern across the entire width of the back near the edge.
Step 2: Sharpen the bevel. Clamp the chisel in the honing guide set to 25 degrees (or your desired primary bevel angle). Place the guide and chisel on the coarse stone and push forward with moderate pressure, pulling back with light pressure. Work the entire width of the bevel evenly. After 20 to 30 strokes, check for a burr by running your finger gently across the back side of the edge — you should feel a slight roughness or lip of metal. The burr confirms that you have sharpened all the way to the edge intersection.
Step 3: Refine on the fine stone. Switch to the 6000-grit side and repeat with lighter pressure, 15 to 20 strokes. The fine stone removes the coarse scratches and begins polishing the bevel. Then flip the chisel, lay the back flat on the fine stone, and make five to ten light strokes to remove the burr from the back side.
Step 4: Strop. Draw the bevel backward across the leather strop (spine leading, edge trailing) five to ten times, then flip and strop the back flat against the leather once or twice. The strop removes any remaining burr and polishes the edge to a mirror finish. A properly stropped chisel will shave arm hair effortlessly — this is the standard test for a sharp chisel edge.
Common Tool Sharpening Angles
Match the angle to the tool's intended use
Bench chisels (general purpose): 25-degree primary, 30-degree micro-bevel. Paring chisels (light, precise work): 20-degree primary, 25-degree micro-bevel. Hand plane blades: 25-degree primary, 30-degree micro-bevel. Axes (felling and splitting): 25 to 30 degrees per side convex grind. Hatchets: 30 to 35 degrees per side. Lawn mower blades: 30 to 45 degrees (match the factory angle). Pruning shears (bypass): 20 to 25 degrees single bevel. Hedge shears: 30 to 35 degrees. Shovels and hoes: 45 degrees. Lower angles are sharper but more fragile; higher angles are more durable but require more cutting force.
Sharpening Axes and Hatchets
An axe edge is fundamentally different from a chisel edge. A chisel needs to be razor-sharp and precisely angled for clean woodworking cuts. An axe needs to be sharp enough to bite into wood but robust enough to withstand the impact forces of chopping and splitting without chipping. This is achieved through a convex grind — a rounded bevel that gradually thickens from the edge to the body of the axe head. The convex profile distributes impact forces across a wider area of steel, preventing edge damage while still allowing the thin edge to initiate a cut.
Step 1: Secure the axe. Clamp the axe head in a bench vise with the edge facing away from you at a comfortable working height. If you do not have a vise, place the axe on a stable surface with the head hanging over the edge and hold it firmly with your non-dominant hand. Work gloves are essential — file teeth and axe edges are both capable of serious injury.
Step 2: File the edge. Using the bastard mill file, file into the edge (not along it) at the existing bevel angle — typically 25 to 30 degrees per side for a felling axe, 30 to 35 degrees for a splitting maul or hatchet. Push the file across the edge in smooth, overlapping strokes, lifting on the return stroke (files only cut on the push stroke). Work from the poll (back) toward the edge, following the convex curvature. Count strokes and apply equal numbers to both sides to maintain symmetry. For a moderately dull axe, 20 to 30 strokes per side is sufficient. For a seriously damaged edge with nicks or chips, you may need 50 to 100 strokes per side to reprofile the edge past the damaged area.
Step 3: Refine with a puck stone. A dual-grit sharpening puck (coarse/fine) is the traditional tool for finishing an axe edge in the field. Hold the puck flat against the bevel and move it in small circular motions along the edge, working from heel to toe. The circular motion maintains the convex profile that a flat bench stone would flatten. Use the coarse side first (10 to 15 passes per side), then the fine side (10 to 15 passes per side). The edge should feel sharp to the touch but not razor-sharp — an axe edge that is too thin will chip on impact with hardwood knots.
Step 4: Protect the edge. Apply a thin coating of oil (any household oil — mineral oil, WD-40, even cooking oil) to the sharpened edge to prevent rust. Store axes with the edge covered — a leather sheath, a piece of garden hose slit lengthwise and clamped over the edge, or even a folded piece of cardboard secured with a rubber band. An unprotected axe edge rusts and dulls quickly in a damp garage or shed.
Sharpening Lawn Mower Blades
A dull mower blade tears grass instead of cutting it. Torn grass blades turn brown at the tips within 24 hours, giving the lawn a brownish, dried-out appearance even when well-watered. The ragged wounds also create entry points for fungal diseases, leading to brown patch, dollar spot, and other lawn diseases that require treatment. A sharp blade cuts grass cleanly, leaving green tips and sealed wounds that resist infection. Professional lawn care operators sharpen their blades every 8 to 10 hours of mowing — for a homeowner, that translates to sharpening two to three times per mowing season.
Step 1: Remove the blade safely. Disconnect the spark plug wire (on gas mowers) or remove the battery (on electric mowers) to prevent accidental starting. Tilt the mower on its side with the air filter and carburetor facing up to prevent oil from flooding the air filter. Use a block of wood wedged between the blade and the mower deck to prevent the blade from spinning, and loosen the center bolt with a socket wrench. Note the blade orientation before removing it — reinstalling it upside down results in the dull back edge contacting the grass. Most blades have a marking or sticker on the side that should face the ground.
Step 2: Inspect the blade. Check for bends, cracks, and excessive wear. Hold the blade at eye level and sight along its length — it should be straight. Place it on a flat surface to check for warping. If the blade is bent, cracked, or severely worn (the cutting edge area is less than half its original width), replace it. Mower blades cost $10 to $30 and are easier to replace than to straighten. A bent blade creates vibration that damages the mower spindle bearings — a $200 repair that a $15 blade replacement prevents.
Step 3: Sharpen with a file. Clamp the blade in a vise with the cutting edge up. Using the bastard mill file, file the cutting edge following the factory bevel angle — typically 30 to 45 degrees. Push the file along the edge in one direction only (lift on the return stroke), working from one end of the cutting edge to the other. The goal is a consistent, butter-knife-sharp edge — not razor sharp. A razor-sharp mower blade dulls within minutes of contact with dirt, rocks, and grass stems. A moderately sharp edge lasts the entire mowing session. File both ends of the blade with equal numbers of strokes to maintain balance.
Step 4: Check balance. An unbalanced mower blade vibrates, damages bearings, and cuts unevenly. Balance the blade by placing the center hole on a nail or a blade balancer (a cone-shaped tool that costs $5). If one end dips, file more material from that end until the blade sits level. Blade balance is often more important than blade sharpness for mower performance and longevity.
Step 5: Reinstall. Place the blade back on the spindle in the correct orientation, tighten the bolt to the manufacturer's specified torque (typically 35 to 50 foot-pounds), reconnect the spark plug or battery, and test. The mower should run smoothly without vibration. If you feel vibration, remove the blade and recheck balance.
Sharpening Pruning Shears and Loppers
Bypass pruning shears (the type with two curved blades that slide past each other like scissors) are the most common garden cutting tool, and most homeowners have never sharpened theirs. A sharp bypass pruner slices through a half-inch branch with one hand; a dull one crushes it, leaving a jagged wound that invites disease and requires two hands worth of force. Sharpening takes five minutes and transforms the tool.
Only sharpen the beveled blade. Bypass pruners have one blade with a bevel (the cutting blade) and one flat blade (the anvil or hook). Only the beveled blade gets sharpened. Sharpening the flat blade opens a gap between the blades that prevents them from cutting cleanly. If the flat blade is nicked or burred, very lightly hone it on the fine stone to remove the burr without removing material from the face.
Sharpen at the factory angle. The bevel on a quality pruner is typically 20 to 25 degrees. Open the pruner fully and clamp it or hold it securely. Using the fine side of a bench stone or a small diamond file, make strokes along the bevel from the pivot to the tip, following the curve of the blade. Maintain the factory angle by keeping the stone flat against the existing bevel. Ten to fifteen strokes is usually sufficient. Feel for a slight burr on the back side of the blade and remove it with one or two flat strokes on the back.
Clean and oil the pivot. While the pruner is apart or open, clean the pivot bolt and spring mechanism with a rag dampened with WD-40 or household oil. Apply a drop of oil to the pivot and work it in by opening and closing the pruner several times. A clean, lubricated pivot reduces cutting effort almost as much as sharpening the blade.
Sharpening Shovels, Hoes, and Edgers
Digging and cutting tools benefit enormously from a sharp edge, yet virtually no homeowner sharpens them. A sharp spade slices through sod and roots that a dull one bounces off of. A sharp hoe severs weeds below the soil surface with a smooth push-pull motion; a dull hoe drags through the soil and pushes weeds over without cutting them.
Shovels and spades. Clamp the blade in a vise or brace it against a stable surface. Using the bastard file, file the factory bevel (typically 45 degrees on the outside edge) with 10 to 20 strokes along the edge. Only sharpen the top (outside) edge — the inside remains flat. A flat file produces a workable edge in two minutes. Lightly file any nicks or dings from rock impacts. The edge should be sharp enough to slice into packed soil without foot pressure but not so sharp that it is easily damaged by gravel.
Garden hoes. The same technique applies. The cutting edge of a hoe should be filed to approximately 45 degrees on the outside face. A sharp hoe is one of the most efficient weeding tools in existence — it slices weed stems just below the soil surface with minimal effort. Most gardeners who switch to a sharp hoe stop buying herbicides for routine garden maintenance.
After sharpening any digging tool, apply a coat of oil or spray lubricant to the blade to prevent rust. Wipe down the blade after each use and store in a dry location. A sharp, oiled shovel or hoe will last decades with only occasional touch-up filing.
The Maintenance Mindset
The most important thing about tool sharpening is doing it at all. The specific technique matters less than the habit. A chisel sharpened imperfectly on a $15 stone outperforms a chisel that has never been sharpened on a $200 stone that sits in the drawer. A mower blade filed for five minutes with a hardware store bastard file cuts grass cleaner than a blade that has not been touched in three seasons. Start with the tool that annoys you most — the pruners that crush instead of cutting, the axe that bounces off firewood, the mower that leaves brown tips on the lawn — and sharpen it. The difference in performance is immediately obvious and permanently motivating.
