Do Robot Vacuums Really Clean as Well as Upright Models?

Hard Floor Cleaning: Robot Vacuums Win
On bare hardwood, the robot vacuums outperformed the uprights. The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra picked up 97% of fine dust, 99% of cereal crumbs, 100% of rice, and 95% of pet hair from hardwood. The Roomba j7+ scored 94%, 98%, 99%, and 92% respectively. The Dyson Ball Animal 3: 96%, 97%, 100%, and 91%. The Shark Navigator: 93%, 96%, 98%, and 87%.
The difference is small in absolute terms — we are talking about 2-5 percentage points — but the robot vacuums' advantage on hard floors is consistent and attributable to their design. Robot vacuums ride low to the ground with spinning side brushes that sweep debris from edges into the main suction path. Upright vacuums sit higher and rely primarily on their main brushroll, which is less effective at gathering scattered fine particles from smooth surfaces.
More importantly, robot vacuums clean hard floors with zero effort on the owner's part. They run daily on a schedule, maintaining a baseline of cleanliness that a weekly manual vacuuming session cannot match. For surface debris sitting on top of carpet fibers, robot vacuums come close to matching uprights because the debris does not require deep extraction.
Pet hair on carpet was the largest performance gap in our entire evaluation. The Dyson Ball Animal 3 is specifically designed for pet hair — its motorized brushroll wraps and extracts pet hair from carpet with 97% efficiency in our test. The Roborock picked up 78% of pet hair from medium-pile carpet, and the Roomba j7+ picked up 72%. For households with shedding pets on carpeted floors, an upright vacuum remains essential.
Edge Cleaning: The Unexpected Split
We expected upright vacuums to dominate edge and corner cleaning, and we were wrong. Robot vacuums' spinning side brushes are remarkably effective at sweeping debris from baseboards and corners into the main suction path. On hard floors, the Roborock picked up 91% of edge debris versus the Dyson's 84%. The Roomba scored 88%.
On carpet, edges were closer: Dyson 90%, Roborock 82%, Roomba 79%. The upright's superior suction compensated for the robot's better edge-reaching design, producing a slight advantage for the upright on carpeted edges.
The real-world implication: robot vacuums do a better job maintaining clean baseboards and corners on hard floors because they clean these areas daily on their scheduled runs. Manual vacuuming only reaches edges when the user deliberately angles the vacuum — which many people skip during routine cleaning sessions.
Navigation and Coverage: How Much Does the Robot Miss?
We mapped the cleaning paths of both robot vacuums using time-lapse cameras mounted to the ceiling of our test room. The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra, which uses LiDAR navigation, covered 98% of the accessible floor area in a single cleaning session. The Roomba j7+, which uses camera-based visual navigation, covered 95%. Both robots successfully navigated around furniture legs, under beds, and into tight spaces that would be difficult to reach with an upright vacuum.
Where both robots struggled: areas under low-clearance furniture (below approximately 3.5 inches), very tight spaces between furniture legs (narrower than the robot's body), and rooms with many obstacles on the floor (shoes, toys, cables). The Roomba j7+ did a better job avoiding obstacles thanks to its camera-based object recognition, which identified and avoided shoes, pet waste, and cables. The Roborock occasionally nudged cables and lightweight obstacles out of its path.
Neither robot cleaned stairs, which remain the exclusive domain of handheld or upright vacuums. For multi-story homes, a robot vacuum can maintain the main living floors while a lightweight stick vacuum handles the stairs.
Time and Effort: The Real Comparison
Vacuuming a 1,500 square foot home with an upright vacuum takes approximately 45 minutes of active, physical labor. Doing it properly — moving furniture, hitting edges, going over high-traffic areas twice — can take over an hour. Most people vacuum once or twice per week at most.
A robot vacuum cleans the same 1,500 square feet in about 90 minutes, running at a pace much slower than a human operator. But it requires zero minutes of your time — you set a schedule and it runs while you are at work, asleep, or otherwise occupied. Over a year, a weekly manual vacuuming habit requires roughly 39 hours of labor. A daily-scheduled robot vacuum requires approximately 2 hours of labor total (emptying the dustbin, occasional maintenance, moving obstacles before a cleaning run).

The optimal setup for most American households with mixed flooring (hard floors and carpet) is a robot vacuum running daily on hard floors plus an upright vacuum used weekly on carpets. This combination produces measurably cleaner results than either tool used alone, while reducing the owner's total time investment by 60-70% compared to manual-only vacuuming.
For households with exclusively hard floors (increasingly common in new construction), a robot vacuum can serve as the primary cleaning tool with only occasional manual spot-cleaning needed. For households with wall-to-wall carpeting throughout, an upright vacuum remains the primary tool, with a robot vacuum serving as a nice-to-have supplement rather than a necessity.
Maintenance Costs and Long-Term Ownership
The purchase price of a robot vacuum is only the beginning of its cost. Robot vacuums consume replacement parts at a pace that traditional uprights do not. Challenging for robot vacuums: Multi-story homes require either a robot per floor or carrying a single unit between floors daily — neither is convenient. Homes with thick carpet (pile height above 0.5 inches) exceed the suction capability of most robot vacuums. High-shedding pets (German Shepherds, Huskies, Golden Retrievers) overwhelm the small dustbin within minutes of a cleaning cycle, and pet hair wraps around brush rolls faster than the self-cleaning mechanisms can clear it. One final consideration worth noting: maintenance costs over time tilt further toward the robot vacuum's advantage. Upright vacuums require belt replacements every 6 to 12 months (typically $8 to $15), filter replacements every 3 to 6 months ($12 to $25), and brush roll cleaning that becomes increasingly difficult as hair wraps around the bar. Robot vacuums need side brush replacements every 3 to 6 months ($8 to $12 for a two-pack), filter replacements on a similar schedule, and occasional main brush cleaning — all of which can be done tool-free in under two minutes.
