Purchase Price: Gas Still Wins on Day One
The most popular gas walk-behind mower in America is the Honda HRN216VKA, a self-propelled model with a 21-inch deck and Honda's GCV170 engine. Retail price: $449. The most popular electric equivalent is the Ego LM2135SP, a self-propelled 21-inch battery mower with a 56V 7.5Ah battery. Retail price: $599.
That $150 premium is typical of the category. Comparable gas and electric mowers from the same manufacturer (Ryobi gas vs Ryobi 40V, Toro gas vs Toro 60V) show price gaps of $100-$200 at every tier. Budget gas mowers start around $200; budget electric mowers start around $300. The gap narrows at the premium end, where both categories cluster around $500-$700.
For riders and zero-turns, the gap is larger. A standard 42-inch gas riding mower costs $1,800-$2,500. Electric equivalents from Ego and Ryobi start at $3,500 and climb past $5,000. At this tier, the upfront premium is $1,500-$2,500 — a meaningful difference that takes longer to recoup through operational savings.
Fuel and Electricity: The Operating Cost Gap
This is where the economics shift dramatically in favor of electric. Gas mowers consume between 0.5 and 1.0 gallons of fuel per hour of operation. At the current national average gasoline price of $3.45 per gallon, a quarter-acre lawn that takes 45 minutes to mow costs $1.72-$3.45 in fuel per session. Over a 28-week mowing season (weekly mowing from April through October in most of the continental U.S.), that is $48-$97 per year in gasoline alone.
Electric mowers, by contrast, consume roughly 1.5-2.0 kWh of electricity per charge cycle. At the national average residential electricity rate of $0.16 per kWh, each mow costs $0.24-$0.32 in electricity. Over the same 28-week season, that is $6.72-$8.96 per year. The difference: gas costs $48-$97 per year to fuel; electric costs $7-$9. Over 10 years, that fuel savings alone is $410-$880.
Maintenance: Where Electric Mowers Save the Most
Gas engines require regular maintenance to function properly. Oil changes every 50 hours or annually (whichever comes first), air filter replacement annually, spark plug replacement every 1-2 years, fuel stabilizer for winter storage, and periodic carburetor cleaning. These are not optional — skip them and the engine degrades rapidly.
We tracked the cost and time for each maintenance item on our Honda HRN216VKA over the season. Oil changes required 20 minutes of labor and $8.99 in materials (oil + drain pan). Air filter replacement: 5 minutes and $7.49. Spark plug: 10 minutes and $4.99. Fuel stabilizer: $6.99 per bottle. Blade sharpening: $12 at a local shop or 30 minutes of DIY time. Total annual maintenance cost: approximately $41 in materials plus 65 minutes of labor. Over 10 years: $410 in materials plus nearly 11 hours of cumulative maintenance time.
The Ego LM2135SP's maintenance requirements: sharpen or replace the blade annually. That is the complete list. No oil. No air filter. No spark plug. No fuel stabilizer. No carburetor. The motor is brushless and sealed — there are no user-serviceable components beyond the blade. Annual maintenance cost: $12 for professional blade sharpening. Over 10 years: $120. The savings: $290 in materials and 10+ hours of labor.
Battery Replacement: The Hidden Electric Cost
This is the factor that electric mower critics cite most, and it is a legitimate concern. Lithium-ion batteries degrade over time — they lose capacity with every charge cycle. After 500 full charge cycles, most lithium-ion batteries retain 70-80% of their original capacity. For a weekly mower used 28 times per year, that is roughly 18 years of use before reaching 500 cycles — longer than the expected lifespan of either the mower or the battery.
In practice, battery degradation is more nuanced. Temperature extremes (storing the battery in a freezing garage or a hot shed) accelerate degradation. Consistently running the battery to zero before recharging reduces lifespan. Our Ego battery, after one full season of weekly use with proper storage (indoors, between 50-80°F), showed no measurable capacity loss — the runtime meter still reads the same as week one.
Replacement batteries are expensive. The Ego 56V 7.5Ah battery retails for $279. If you need a replacement at year 5 (unlikely with proper care) or year 8 (more realistic), that single purchase erases a significant portion of the operational savings. However, battery prices have dropped 40% in the past three years and are projected to continue declining. A replacement battery in 2031 will likely cost $150-$175 at current price-decline rates.
Even with one battery replacement factored in, the electric mower remains cheaper over 10 years — but the margin narrows considerably. Without a battery replacement, electric wins decisively.
The 10-Year Total Cost Comparison
Here is the full cost breakdown for both mower types over a 10-year ownership period, assuming a quarter-acre lawn mowed weekly for 28 weeks per year.

The electric mower saves approximately $695 over 10 years — plus more than 10 hours of maintenance time. The savings are front-loaded toward the later years as fuel and maintenance costs accumulate on the gas side. At the three-year mark, the gas mower is still cheaper in total expenditure. By year five, the costs have equalized. From year six onward, electric pulls ahead and the gap widens every year.
Performance: Can Electric Really Match Gas?
Five years ago, the answer was "not quite." Today, for lawns up to half an acre, the answer is "yes, with one caveat." The Ego LM2135SP matched the Honda HRN216VKA in cut quality, self-propelled drive power, and mulching performance on our test lawn. The cut was clean and even at every height setting. The self-propulsion handled moderate slopes without bogging down. Mulching performance was comparable — grass clippings were finely chopped and distributed evenly.
The caveat is runtime. The Ego's 7.5Ah battery provided 52 minutes of continuous mowing on our test lawn — enough for a quarter-acre with margin to spare. But on thick, tall grass (after two weeks of rain delays), runtime dropped to 38 minutes. A half-acre lawn would require a battery swap mid-mow. The Honda, by contrast, runs until the gas tank is empty — roughly 90 minutes — and refuels in 30 seconds. For large lawns, gas remains the practical choice until battery technology improves further.
Noise and Neighborhood Factors
The Ego measured 65 dB at the operator's position — roughly the volume of a normal conversation. The Honda measured 86 dB — loud enough to require hearing protection (OSHA recommends protection above 85 dB). This 21-decibel difference is enormous in practice. Decibels are logarithmic: 86 dB is roughly four times louder than 65 dB to the human ear.
For early-morning mowers, the difference is not just comfort — it is courtesy. Many municipalities have noise ordinances that prohibit yard equipment before 8 or 9 AM. An electric mower at 65 dB can often be used earlier without complaint, giving morning-schedule homeowners more flexibility.
Noise Levels and Neighborhood Considerations
Gas mowers produce 85–95 dB(A) at the operator's position — loud enough that the CDC recommends hearing protection for exposure exceeding 15 minutes. Electric mowers produce 65–75 dB(A), roughly one-quarter the perceived loudness. This 20 dB difference has practical implications beyond hearing health: many municipalities have noise ordinances that restrict lawn care equipment use to specific hours (typically 8 AM to 8 PM on weekdays, 9 AM to 5 PM on weekends), and some HOAs are beginning to restrict gas-powered equipment entirely due to noise complaints.
The noise difference is particularly significant for early-morning mowing. A gas mower running at 7 AM on a Saturday will generate complaints from neighbors; an electric mower at the same time may go unnoticed. For parents of infants, shift workers who sleep during the day, or anyone living in a densely spaced neighborhood, the noise reduction of electric mowers eliminates a source of social friction that gas mowers create. In our testing, the EGO LM2135SP was audible from 50 feet away but not intrusive — comparable to a loud conversation. The Honda HRX217HZA gas mower was audible from 200 feet away and clearly identifiable as powered equipment.
Battery-powered electric mowers also eliminate the vibration exposure that gas mowers transmit through the handle. At the national average electricity rate of $0.16 per kWh, annual electricity cost for the same 30 hours of mowing is approximately $7.20. The fuel cost difference over 10 years: $450–$720.
Maintenance costs. Gas mowers require annual oil changes ($5–$10 for oil), air filter replacements ($8–$15), spark plug replacements ($3–$5), and periodic carburetor cleaning or repair ($30–$80 at a shop). Gas should be stabilized with fuel stabilizer before winter storage ($5–$8), and ethanol-blended gasoline left unstabilized causes carburetor corrosion — the most common gas mower repair. Total annual maintenance cost: $30–$60, or $300–$600 over 10 years. Electric mowers require blade sharpening (same as gas, $10–$15 annually) and eventual battery replacement ($150–$250 at year 5–7). Total maintenance cost: $200–$400 over 10 years.
Total cost of ownership (10-year comparison, push mower). A Honda HRN216VKA gas mower purchased at $400 costs approximately $1,120–$1,790 over 10 years including fuel and maintenance. An EGO LM2135SP battery-electric mower purchased at $550 (with battery and charger) costs approximately $757–$1,000 over 10 years. The electric mower's higher purchase price is offset by dramatically lower operating costs, resulting in a lower total cost of ownership by year 4–5. For homeowners who expect to own their mower for more than five years, the electric option is less expensive in total — a conclusion that surprises most buyers who focus on the sticker price.
The Bottom Line
For lawns up to half an acre, an electric mower is cheaper over its lifetime, requires virtually no maintenance, is dramatically quieter, and produces no direct emissions. The higher upfront cost is recouped by year five and continues to generate savings for the remainder of the mower's life. For lawns larger than half an acre, gas remains the more practical choice due to runtime limitations, though this gap is narrowing with every generation of battery technology.
If you are replacing an aging gas mower today, the economic case for switching to electric is clear. If your gas mower is running well and your lawn is large, there is no urgency to switch — ride out its remaining lifespan and evaluate the electric options available when it is time to replace. The technology is improving rapidly enough that waiting two or three years will likely yield better batteries at lower prices.
