A backyard fire pit is one of the most satisfying and highest-return DIY projects a homeowner can undertake. The materials cost $150 to $500 for a permanent, professional-looking installation. The construction time is one weekend — realistically six to eight hours of actual work spread across a Saturday. The result is a year-round gathering space that fundamentally changes how you use your yard. Evenings that previously ended when the sun went down now extend hours into the night. Fall and spring — seasons where the backyard sits unused in most households — become the prime fire pit months. Real estate agents consistently report that a well-built fire pit is among the most-noticed outdoor features during home showings, and the perceived value far exceeds the modest construction cost.

Our outdoor testing team built three fire pit designs over the past year — a simple ring pit using retaining wall blocks, a sunken fire pit with a gravel base, and an elevated stone pit with an integrated seating wall — and used each extensively across all four seasons. We tested construction methods, material durability, drainage solutions, cooking functionality, and safety clearances. Before You Build: Code, Location, and Planning

Check local regulations first. Fire pit regulations vary significantly by municipality, county, and HOA. Some jurisdictions require a permit for any permanent outdoor fire feature. Some restrict fire pit size (typically to 3 feet or less in diameter). Some mandate minimum distances from structures, property lines, and overhead obstructions. Some ban open fires entirely during certain seasons or fire danger ratings. Call your local fire marshal's office or building department before purchasing materials. The phone call takes five minutes and can save you from fines, mandatory removal, or insurance complications down the road.

Location selection. The National Fire Protection Association recommends a minimum clearance of 10 feet from any structure (house, garage, shed, fence, deck). Many local codes increase this to 15 or 25 feet. Check overhead clearance as well — the fire pit should not be under tree branches, awnings, pergolas, or power lines. A minimum of 12 feet of vertical clearance above the fire pit is a reasonable guideline. Place the pit on level ground that slopes slightly away from the center for drainage. Avoid locations where prevailing winds blow smoke directly toward the house or neighbor's house — observe wind patterns on several different days before committing to a location.

Underground utilities. Before digging any excavation, call 811 (the national Dig Safely number) to have underground utility lines marked. Gas lines, electric lines, cable, water, and sewer pipes may run through your yard in locations you would not expect. The marking service is free and typically completed within two to three business days. Do not skip this step — hitting a gas line with a shovel is a life-threatening emergency, and damaging utilities creates liability and repair costs that dwarf the fire pit project.

Surface material. The area immediately surrounding the fire pit — extending at least 3 to 5 feet beyond the pit wall — should be non-combustible. Gravel, stone pavers, brick, decomposed granite, or bare compacted earth are all appropriate. Do not build a fire pit on a wood deck, composite decking, grass (which dies from heat and presents a fire risk), or any synthetic surface that can melt. If you want the fire pit area to have a finished appearance, a gravel pad extending 4 to 5 feet around the pit is the simplest and most forgiving option.

Materials: What to Buy

For a standard 36-inch interior diameter fire pit using retaining wall blocks, you need the following materials. All are available at home improvement stores and most landscape supply yards.

Retaining wall blocks. Trapezoidal-shaped concrete blocks designed for curved walls — typically 12 inches long, 4 inches tall, and 7 inches deep, with a slight taper that creates a natural curve when placed side by side. The number of blocks required depends on the pit diameter and the number of rows. For a 36-inch interior diameter, two-row-high pit (8 inches tall), you need approximately 24 to 30 blocks per row (48 to 60 total). Three rows (12 inches tall) is more common and requires 72 to 90 blocks. Cost: $1.50 to $3.50 per block; total $100 to $300.

Fire-rated adhesive. Construction adhesive formulated for masonry and rated for high temperatures. Applied between rows to prevent blocks from shifting. A single tube is sufficient for most builds. Cost: $5 to $8.

Gravel (pea gravel or crushed stone). For the base layer inside the pit (drainage) and the surrounding apron. You need approximately 1/2 to 1 cubic yard for a standard installation. Cost: $30 to $60 delivered, or $5 to $8 per 50-pound bag if hauling yourself (you will need 15 to 20 bags).

Landscape fabric. Placed under the gravel to prevent weed growth through the base. A small roll is sufficient. Cost: $8 to $15.

Steel fire ring insert (optional but recommended). A steel ring that sits inside the block wall, protecting the blocks from direct flame contact and extending their lifespan. The ring radiates heat toward sitters and contains the fire more neatly than blocks alone. Size the ring to fit inside your block circle with approximately 1 inch of clearance. Cost: $30 to $80.

Construction: Step by Step

Step 1: Mark the footprint. Drive a stake into the center of the fire pit location. Tie a string to the stake equal to half the exterior diameter of the pit (for a 36-inch interior pit using 7-inch-deep blocks, the exterior diameter is approximately 50 inches; half is 25 inches). Walk the string in a circle, marking the ground with spray paint or flour to outline the excavation area. Mark a second, larger circle 4 to 5 feet beyond the pit wall for the gravel apron.

Step 2: Excavate. Dig inside the pit circle to a depth of 6 inches. This creates a recessed base for the first row of blocks and a reservoir for the drainage gravel layer. If you are building the optional gravel apron, strip grass and soil to a depth of 2 to 3 inches within the apron circle. Level the bottom of the excavation using a level and a straight board. The base must be level — unlevel ground produces a crooked, unstable pit.

Step 3: Add the base layer. Lay landscape fabric over the excavated pit floor, overlapping edges by 6 inches. Fill with 4 inches of compacted gravel. Compact the gravel by tamping with a hand tamper or the flat end of a 4x4 post. Check level after compacting. Add or remove gravel as needed to achieve a flat, level surface. This gravel base provides drainage — water from rain and extinguishing will percolate through the gravel rather than pooling in the pit.

Step 4: Lay the first course. Place the first row of retaining wall blocks on the compacted gravel base, arranging them in a circle with the tapered edges creating the curve. The flat back (straight edge) faces outward; the tapered front faces inward. Adjust spacing between blocks so the circle closes neatly. Use a level across the tops of the blocks to verify that each block is level and that the entire ring is on the same plane. Tap blocks into alignment with a rubber mallet. This first course is the most important — it determines the alignment of every subsequent row.

Step 5: Add subsequent courses. Apply a bead of fire-rated construction adhesive along the top of the first course. Lay the second course, staggering the joints (each second-course block should span the joint between two first-course blocks, like a brick wall pattern). Check level and adjust. Repeat for the third course if building a three-row pit. Let the adhesive cure for 24 hours before use.

Step 6: Install the fire ring (if using). Lower the steel fire ring into the center of the block circle. It should sit on the gravel base with the top rim approximately level with the top of the block wall. The ring does not need to be attached to the blocks — its weight holds it in position, and thermal expansion during use requires it to be free to expand slightly.

Step 7: Complete the apron. Fill the excavated apron area with 2 to 3 inches of gravel, raking it level. The gravel apron provides a clean, non-combustible surface around the pit and defines the fire pit area visually. Optional: edge the apron with a row of retaining wall blocks or landscape edging to contain the gravel.

Fire Safety: Non-Negotiable Rules

A backyard fire pit is an open fire. Treated casually, it is a legitimate fire hazard. Treated with basic discipline, it is no more dangerous than a gas grill — which is to say, safe if you follow straightforward rules and dangerous if you do not.

Never use gasoline, lighter fluid, or any accelerant to start or maintain a fire in a fire pit. Accelerants produce explosive flare-ups that can throw burning embers 10 feet or more and ignite clothing on bystanders. Use newspaper, natural firestarter sticks, or a chimney starter to ignite the initial fire. Once the kindling is established, add progressively larger pieces of dry, seasoned hardwood.

Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose, or bucket of sand within arm's reach. This is not overcautious — it is the minimum responsible preparation. A garden hose connected and pressurized (nozzle off, ready to spray) is the most practical option. In the event of a spark igniting dry grass, mulch, or clothing, you need suppression capability immediately, not after a trip to the garage.

Burn only seasoned hardwood. Green (unseasoned) wood produces excessive smoke, pops and throws sparks, and burns at lower temperatures. Softwoods (pine, spruce, cedar) burn fast, throw sparks, and coat the pit with creosote. Seasoned hardwood (oak, hickory, maple, ash — dried for at least six months after splitting) burns cleanly, produces less smoke, generates excellent heat, and throws minimal sparks. Never burn treated lumber, painted wood, plywood, particleboard, or any manufactured wood product — the chemicals in the treatments, paints, and adhesives produce toxic smoke.

Fully extinguish the fire before leaving. Let the fire burn down to embers naturally. Spread the embers flat across the pit floor with a poker or stick. Douse with water until the hissing stops — pour slowly and thoroughly, including around the edges where embers hide against the wall. Stir the wet ash with a stick to expose any remaining hot spots and douse again. Feel the ash with the back of your hand (from a safe distance — hold your hand several inches above the ash surface). If you feel heat, apply more water. An improperly extinguished fire can reignite hours later from a single remaining ember exposed to wind.

Monitor children and pets. Establish a safety perimeter — a clearly marked line at least 5 feet from the pit edge that children must stay behind unless directly supervised. The stone blocks of the pit wall retain heat for 30 to 60 minutes after the fire is extinguished and can burn on contact. Teach children that the rocks are hot even after the flames are gone.

Cooking Over the Fire Pit

A fire pit designed for wood fires doubles as an outdoor cooking station with minimal additional equipment. The key is managing the fire for cooking — which requires coals, not flames — and having a stable cooking surface above them.

A cooking grate sized to rest inside the pit (or across the top of the blocks) provides a stable surface for grilling. Round cooking grates designed for fire pits cost $20 to $50 and are available in standard diameters that match common pit sizes. Let the fire burn down to glowing coals before cooking — direct flame is too hot and too variable for cooking. A bed of coals provides consistent, controllable radiant heat in the 400 to 600 degree range, ideal for grilling.

Tripod and chain setups suspend a Dutch oven or pot above the fire at an adjustable height, allowing you to control cooking temperature by raising or lowering the pot. Campfire tripods cost $25 to $60 and accommodate pots up to 12 quarts. Soups, stews, chili, and baked beans cooked over open coals in a cast iron Dutch oven develop a smoky depth of flavor that is impossible to replicate on a kitchen stove.

Skewers and roasting forks are the simplest and most social cooking method — everyone gathers around the fire and cooks their own food. Telescoping roasting forks ($5 to $15 for a set) eliminate the need to whittle sticks and provide a comfortable distance from the heat. Beyond the obvious marshmallows, try roasting sausages, bread dough wrapped around the fork (campfire bread sticks), peppers, and fruit (pineapple and peach slices caramelize beautifully over coals).

Seasonal Maintenance

After each use: Remove ash once it has cooled completely (24 hours minimum). Excessive ash accumulation restricts airflow, which makes fires harder to start and produces more smoke. Dispose of cold ash in a metal container — never in a plastic bag, trash can, or compost pile, as hidden embers can smolder for days. Small amounts of wood ash are an excellent garden amendment — it is rich in potassium and raises soil pH.

Spring: Inspect blocks for cracks caused by freeze-thaw cycles. Retaining wall blocks are rated for outdoor use and resist freeze-thaw well, but stress cracks can develop over years of thermal cycling from fire use. Replace cracked blocks. Check that the steel fire ring has not warped or rusted through. Clean out any debris (leaves, animal nests) that accumulated over winter.

During fire season: Periodically check that the gravel base has not compacted below the level of the surrounding grade, which would allow water to pool in the pit instead of draining through the gravel. Add gravel if needed to maintain drainage. Inspect the surrounding apron for grass or weed encroachment that could catch sparks.

A well-built fire pit requires minimal maintenance and lasts for decades. The blocks and steel ring may need replacement after 10 to 15 years of heavy use, but the excavation, gravel base, and overall structure are permanent. The most common upgrade homeowners make after their first fire pit season is adding permanent seating — stone benches, built-in curved walls, or Adirondack chairs arranged at a comfortable conversation distance of 5 to 7 feet from the fire. The fire pit becomes the outdoor room that the rest of the yard orbits around, and the weekend project that launched it pays dividends every evening you spend there.
